You Gotta Serve Somebody

Sermon for the Seventh Sunday after Trinity

Paul compares slaves to impurity and lawlessness to slaves of righteousness. As he says, when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. Just like the slaves were free of all other duties, those who are enslaved to sin are certainly free from righteousness, from following God’s way. You hear people flaunt this all the time. They say, it’s so much more freeing not to live under those rules and morals, not to have guilt over what I do, I can do whatever I want! But in reality they are not free. You gotta serve somebody.
