Heaven and Earth Joined Together

Sermon for Judica, the fifth Sunday in Lent

God’s goal has always been to dwell with us, to have heaven and earth come together. In the beginning, they were both good, but separate, and moving toward coming together.

Since the fall into sin, there is a separation where the earth is corrupted and no longer a good image of heaven. We get glimpses of this throughout the Bible. Heaven has a glassy, calm sea, earth’s image is a sea, but one that is turbulent and dangerous. Heaven has a city of God, the earth has worldly cities like Jerusalem who persecute and stone the prophets and kill Jesus Christ. But as we move towards Holy Week and the passion of Jesus, it is that death of Christ which ultimately brings heaven and earth together.
